What is a totalitarian state?

A totalitarian state can be seen as the opposite of a state with a lot of freedom. The state is being ruled by one single party with unlimited power. They decide everything: what you think, who you marry, what you like, everything. Examples of totalitarian states are the Nazi Germany and Soviet Communist Party.
